Yunnan & Sustainability
We count ourselves very lucky to live and work in a coffee-producing country, especially a country like China that has made such remarkable progress in coffee cultivation, quality, and sustainable processing in recent years.
We take active steps at the farm and producer level to buy and support sustainable coffee. We believe that sustainability and quality go together, and work hard to find and support people that share our beliefs.
There are several ways we support the development of Yunnan coffee.
We pay premiums that farmers use to build drying beds, purchase mechanical drying equipment powered by smokeless pellets made from discarded coffee husks, and purchase organic fertilizers to name a few.
For many farmers, sustainability is much more than just a buzzword, but is a means to supporting their families and communities for years to come.
Another way we support sustainable coffee production in China is buy purchasing natural and honey processed coffees that result in less water usage, and less acidic runoff. This helps protect the integrity of ground waters.
When we need to buy washed coffee, we prefer a new, locally developed process called “environmentally friendly washing” which uses 80% less water used in traditional washed coffees but delivers the same great tastes.
